History of the Hall
Arbuthnot Hall was built in 1904, having been commissioned and paid for by local resident, Elinor Arbuthnot in memory of her late husband, Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot. Elinor gave the land and building to a charitable trust to provide a “village hall for the use of the inhabitants of the [civil] Parish of Wonersh and the neighbourhood thereof without distinction of sex or political, religious or other opinions.” The Village Hall, which opened in 1905, was designed to have many uses for the small community at the time, including as a library and reading-room, and to serve as a cricket pavilion during the summer months. The architect selected by Elinor was Charles Harrison Townsend .
The Arbuthnot Hall committee are committed to retaining the 'Arts & Crafts' heritage of the Hall and securing it as a community asset for future generations. A vibrant local hub for the community
Arbuthnot Hall has served as a hub for local community life, providing a venue where local people can come together for a variety of activities including fitness classes, parties, music nights, club dinners, pantomimes, film nights, quiz nights and Christmas celebrations - to name but a few. Several Clubs and Societies also use the Hall for their meetings - links to some of them are set out below.
Cricket Club
We are a friendly village club playing Sunday Friendly cricket against local villages and travelling sides. The club has played on The Green every year for over 180 years.
Our side is mainly local past and current residents of the village. We welcome new members of all ages and abilities.

Gardening Club
Formed in 2006 and now with a membership of 150, the Gardening Club meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Hall. Membership is open to all village residents (you don’t have to have any gardening expertise!), only costs £12.50 per year and talks cover a wide range of garden related topics and interests. Why not give us a try and come as a guest!

History Society
We are one of the oldest societies in the village, which offers interesting monthly talks and visits to local buildings of architectural interest. The annual subscription is £10 per person or £15 per couple. We presently have more than 100 members and visitors are always welcome at £3 per talk.

Shades
SHADES (Shamley Green Amateur Dramatic and Entertainment Society) was founded in the1950’s by Reg Higden. Over the last 48 years we have put on various pantomimes and plays in the Arbuthnot Hall. We always love to welcome new members on stage and off, so if you are aged 14 years or over, come and have a go, if you would like to join us, please contact us through our Facebook page.
Village Association
The SGVA’s purpose is to protect and represent Shamley Green in the face of environmental challenges which might affect the amenity of the village (eg planning, development, traffic management etc) and to ensure it remains a lovely place to live, now and in the future. We welcome input and are easily accessible to hear the views and opinions of our members.

Table Tennis
The U3A run a table tennis group on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month at 10.30am in the Hall. "We are always happy to welcome new members to our friendly and enthusiastic group of players. All equipment and refreshments provided… just come along and have fun."
